moves are smooth and elegant, like a cat...it's very balletic. It's also bloody
hard to do without falling over!"
• (on being asked to audition for Legolas) "I thought: 'Definitely! Game on!' So I learned the scene and acted it on video tape, and, shortly after, got this incredible phone call saying they were offering me the role! It was like winning the lottery! Like having all your dreams fulfilled! It was amazing!" - LotR Official Movie Guide

Bloom was born in Canterbury, Kent. At 16, he moved to London where he joined the National Youth Theatre for two seasons and then gained a scholarship to train with the British American Drama Academy. On completion of his scholarship, Bloom played the lead in "A Walk in the Vienna Woods." Bloom's screen debut was in the feature film Wilde. He was then accepted to Guildhall and chose to put his screen career on hold for the opportunity to further his education. After graduating from Guildhall, Bloom performed in the television series "Midsomer Murders."
For his
role in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two
Towers and the Return of the King, Bloom and the
rest of the principal cast were nominated for Outstanding Performance by the
Cast of a Theatrical Motion Picture by the Screen Actors Guild. He has since
appeared in Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down and in Pirates
of the Caribbean, opposite Johnny Depp, and will next be seen in Kingdom of
Heaven.
Back in
his school days, Orlando would do
anything for a laugh --even fake his own death. Orlando was the class clown. He
especially like to pull pranks on substitute teachers. One of his favorite
pranks was the "Faked Suicide". He was in eighth grade in an old
school building with huge windows that opened from the bottom. When he got word
that a sub would be teaching, Orlando would take off his shoes and have a friend
stand inside the classroom dangling the heels of his shoes out the window from
his third floor classroom. As the teacher walked in, his friend would holler;
"Orli's hanging out the window. I can't hold on much longer!" Then,
just as the teacher reached the window, his friend would drop the shoes and
scream. Meanwhile, Orlando was sprawled on the ground below playing dead. The
teachers, thinking Orlando had fallen from the third floor, would grab their
hearts and scream too!
Elf and a dwarf: Legolas, the sword-fighting son of an elf king, played by Orlando Bloom; and Gimli, the stout-hearted axe-man who comes to represent the Kazak, the dwarves of Middle-earth, played by John Rhys-Davies. The comic contrast between the boisterous dwarf and the elegant elf becomes a constant source of humor and delight. Orlando Bloom explains: "Elves see dwarves as these muddy creatures who steal from the earth without giving back. But Legolas and Gimli grow to respect one another’s differences. They learn to rely on each other in battle — and to laugh together."
