Do you find yourself with mouth sores every once in a while? The oral tissues are just as vulnerable as your teeth to problems, but they usually resolve themselves and disappear within a week or two. But if you are finding yours is lingering, it may be a sign that something more serious is going on.
Typically, oral sores crop up due to infections, whether it be bacterial, viral, or fungal. They can also show up because of disease, simple irritation from loose braces wires or ill-fitting dentures, or irritation from a broken tooth or damaged filling.
Let’s take a look at four common causes of oral lesions:
1- Canker sores. These are either white or yellow in the middle within a red border. You may find them inhabiting your tongue, inside cheeks, lips, throat, or along the gumline. Thankfully, canker sores are not contagious and resolve themselves.
2- Candidiasis/thrush. This fungal infection appears as white spots because of an overgrowth of yeast. You might find these on your tongue or mouth. These may bring with them a sore throat along with problems swallowing.
3- Cold sores. These highly contagious sores tend to show up outside of the mouth as red blisters. They often manifest around your lips or under the nose or chin.
4- Abscessed tooth. If you have a diseased tooth, you may end up with a bacterial infection in the nerves of the tooth. This can bring with it a severe toothache, hot and cold tooth sensitivity, or swollen lymph nodes.
