For decades, patients have used dentures to replace missing teeth. Thanks to advances in technology and treatment in the dental field, Dr. Hockel’s office offers two types of dentures at the forefront of restorative dentistry: custom dentures and implant dentures.
Custom dentures represent the evolution of restorative dentistry beyond traditional dentures, which are known for not fitting well. Traditional dentures also have a reputation for being uncomfortable and not looking like natural teeth.
Each set of custom dentures is made to look like natural teeth and gums. First, the staff at Dr. Hockel’s office will take impressions of your mouth and bite. Those impressions are used as the basis of a model from which to construct your dentures that are handcrafted from top-quality materials. The resulting set of custom dentures provides a comfortable fit and leaves you with a beautiful looking smile. Plus, your bite will remain in ideal alignment for added comfort, and to provide you with a younger look.
Implant dentures are another option for replacing all of your missing teeth on the same arch, but that desire a more secure fit.
To install an implant denture, multiple dental implants are placed in each dental arch. These implants are titanium posts that are surgically inserted into the jawbone. An abutment snaps the implant dentures into place. These implants replace the roots of the missing teeth and provide more support than other dentures. Implant dentures will not slip or shift like traditional dentures, making for a better fit and added comfort.
Whether you choose custom dentures or implant dentures, the dentures will need to be removed and cleaned daily. Plus, you should still visit the dentist twice a year for checkups to evaluate the health of your jawbone, jaw joints, gums, and oral cancer screenings.
The importance of replacing missing teeth
If you are living with missing teeth, it makes it difficult to chew food, and your confidence can suffer as you may shy away from social gatherings. Over time, living without any teeth can lead to bite misalignment and even bone loss and premature aging. Lost teeth also increase the risk factor of other oral health issues, such as jaw problems including temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) and sleep breathing disorders like obstructive sleep apnea.
